For people living in the United Kingdom or any other Commonwealth country outside of the European Union, travel to the USA may not be covered by certain laws. There are three main reasons for this. Non-US residents have been traveling to the USA for a long time; they will have valid reasons for wanting to visit and stay for a short period of time.
For many people planning to travel to the USA this is always a concern. It may be a bit overwhelming when you finally reach the port of departure. The best thing to do is to get advice from the customs and immigration service at the port of arrival. An immigration lawyer will be able to give you good advice whether you are a legal permanent resident or non-US resident; the latter should have the correct visa type and number and therefore be able to tell you what your rights are once in the USA.
Once you have arrived in the USA either via a sea, air or land, you will need to have a passport. The process of obtaining a passport is not too complicated; you can apply for an Electronic passport online via the American consular department. If you have applied via the port of entry then you will require a visa. You will have to apply for an entry permit two to three months before your flight and the date of your departure; the same applies if you are travelling back to the USA.
There are three types of US citizens: lawful permanent residents, non-US citizens and visitors. If you are from the USA then you are a lawful permanent resident. This means that you cannot be removed from the USA without the order of the federal court. If you are from another country and wish to change your status from a lawful permanent resident to a non-US citizen, you will have to obtain an immigrant visa.
Visas are usually obtained via the visa office in the port of entry. There is also a special Visa Waiver Program for travelers coming to the USA for business purposes. You must apply for a visa at the same time as applying for a passport. Once you have obtained your visa then you can travel to the USA by using a passport. You must apply for your visa four to six weeks before your departure date. Once you have obtained your visa then you can travel to the USA once you have obtained a residence visa.
Non-US citizens do not need to apply for a visa but must get a visa if they wish to travel to the USA by travelling by plane. You must apply for an immigrant visa at the same time as applying for a tourist visa. You can apply for an immigrant visa at any US consulate abroad or through the Federal Maritime Commission. You must follow the guidelines for applying for an immigrant visa.
To apply for a visa online, you will be asked to provide information like name, address, contact number, date of birth, passport number etc. You must ensure that all the details you give are correct. The visa agent will provide you with all the required documents and visa number. After getting the visa, you must return to the consul who will issue a visa number to you. You must apply for a visa every year.
If you want to travel outside the USA then you must first obtain a legal status in the country. There are various methods by which you can apply for legal status. If you have a business visa or a visitor visa then you must continue to work in the same country for two years after which you can travel to the USA, provided that you continue to reside in the same country. If you have an immigrant visa then you can travel outside the USA if you have a green card.
